Essential Question:
Your task, as we discussed in class, is to answer the rather daunting question above as convincingly as possible.
Explore various composite indices of “wealth” and quality of life and define your criteria as to what makes a country wealthy. Use the indices that best support your criteria.
Compare countries based on your chosen indices and evaluate them by compiling the most important data in a matrix using Google Sheets (a template has been made for you in Google Drive).
Your analysis must include the following countries:
The visual project you create can take any form you choose (video, prezi, blog post, poster, Bollywood dance, etc). So long as it meets the above requirements and persuasively responds to the Essential Question using data as evidence and clear criteria for judgement, you're all good!
You will be assessed using the Visual Project Rubric. Your project is due on Friday, December 12.
- What is the "wealthiest" country in the world?
Your task, as we discussed in class, is to answer the rather daunting question above as convincingly as possible.
Explore various composite indices of “wealth” and quality of life and define your criteria as to what makes a country wealthy. Use the indices that best support your criteria.
- Use the maps and other visual data from indices in class and dig deeper into the data to decide which best capture what you believe is necessary for a broad and inclusive definition of wealth. You might tend toward traditional economic indicators, such as GDP or income/capita, or you might lean towards data from the Global Peace Index, the Happy Planet Index, and so on.
- By choosing the indices that best reflect your views on what it means to be "wealthy," you are creating a more refined set of criteria for judgment to apply to the countries you will examine.
Compare countries based on your chosen indices and evaluate them by compiling the most important data in a matrix using Google Sheets (a template has been made for you in Google Drive).
Your analysis must include the following countries:
- USA, Taiwan, China
- At least one country from each of the following Northern regions: Asia, Europe, Oceania
- At least one country from each of the following Southern regions: Asia, MENA, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America
- It is recommended that you include more countries and break down the regions further (e.g., include multiple countries from MENA, Sub-Saharan Africa, North-East Asia, South-East Asia, Scandinavia, and so on)
